Discusses a scenario where a user who logs on to a Windows SharePoint Services Web site by using anonymous access is prompted to enter their credentials if they access a document that is checked out by another user.

A user logs on to a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site by using anonymous access. When the user browses to a document library and then clicks a document that is checked out by another user, the document does not open. Instead, a Connect to ServerName dialog box is displayed on the screen, and the user is prompted to enter a user name and password.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because a user who logs on to the Web site by using anonymous access cannot open or view a document in a document library if that document is already checked out by another user.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do one or more of the following, depending on your situation:
Assign a Windows user account to the users who have anonymous access. The users can log on to the Web site by using the Windows user account.
Instruct users not to check out documents.
Instruct users to only check out a document when they have to and then to check in the document immediately after they finish working with it.
